Kasteel Cannenburgh in Vaassen

Cannenburgh Castle

Water still mirrors the mellow red-brick walls of Cannenburgh Castle in Vaassen, Gelderland, built in 1543 above the vaulted cellars of an earlier medieval stronghold. The Dutch warlord Maarten van Rossum commissioned the Renaissance castle, placing his stone likeness high on the central tower to look out across the estate. Today, centuries of noble ownership have given way to the quiet rhythm of parkland, where a wooden waterwheel still turns beside the channels cut through the ancient oak woods of the Veluwe.
